A Brief Outline of the syllabus:

If you have a Grade Six or better in ‘O’level English, you will be doing General Paper when you come to this college.

There is no set syllabus for this paper and as its name suggests, the subject matter covered is wide ranging. This adds both to the appeal and the complexity of the subject.  Much of the background knowledge required for General Paper comes from what you have learnt in other subjects and by keeping yourselves well informed about what is going on in the world around you.  This involves reading newspapers and magazines as well as listening to the news on television and the radio.

Assessment in the subject aims to establish your level of maturity in writing and understanding English. This is achieved in two ways. Firstly, from a range of essay topics you select one and write an essay where you put forward your ideas and opinions; support them with well reasoned arguments and come to a logical conclusion. Secondly, your understanding of English is assessed by asking questions on either a passage of prose, a table of contents or a series of short statements, which you must answer by generating possible outcomes using the given information as a starting point.

While examination is in written form, a significant amount of class time is devoted to discussion and verbal presentation of opinions and supporting arguments.
