A brief outline of the syllabus: Students study nine books over
the two year period which are examined in three examinations, each lasting
three hours. Paper one includes
Shakespeare and other authors; Paper
two is eighteenth and nineteenth century
writing; Paper three is twentieth
century writing. These books consist
of plays, novels and poetry. |
The particular qualities which are needed for
this subject:
The ability to demonstrate an
understanding of the text, give an informed and independent opinion and
communicate these clearly and appropriately in good English. The ability to organise and present
information is important and ideas and arguments should be presented clearly
and logically. Students should enjoy
independent reading. |

Suggested prior grades which A
level teachers feel are necessary for success in this subject.: (NB
These may not be the minimum entry qualifications set by the Ministry) Grade 6 or better in O level
English Language. O level Literature is
absolutely NOT a prerequisite. |
Further education and career prospects for
someone who studies this subject-
Law, teaching, public service,
management, any profession where critical analysis and evaluation are
important. A level English combines
well with other subjects and is a sure indicator that a student can cope with
an English medium tertiary course. |
